Members of Greater Naples Branch took part in Naples’ first nonpartisan Citywide Day of Action / Day of Issues on Saturday, Nov 4. The new event for Naples was sponsored by Collier Freedom and other Lee and Collier county social justice groups. Demonstrations in support of 19 different issues were held at 19 intersections across the city of Naples. AAUW was among those supporting “Women’s Rights” at the intersection of Golden Gate Parkway and US 41. Event organizers planned the day to help citizens become more attentive, informed, focused and involved in the issues facing the community and the nation
From noon until 3 pm, ten members demonstrated in support of “Women’s Rights” by peacefully holding signs and banners for all passing vehicles and pedestrians to see. New members Christine Basler, Nina Christensen, Charmaine Klein, and Judy Lyons joined “almost new” members Shelley Gebar and Jan Messer, who with Karen Clegg, Ardel Nelson, Mary Schell and Janet Welch were joined by guest Pat Clancy. A potential new member Julia Otis even joined in. All held signs based on AAUW priorities.
A rally followed at Cambier Park from 4 to 6 pm at which all participating groups heard community and national speakers. The AAUW table was hosted by Florence Chandler, Karen Clegg and Ardel Nelson where they distributed Public Policy flyers and collected names of potential AAUW members.
