AAUW GNB members paused their busy schedules on December 9 to share in an annual Holiday Luncheon held at Shula’s. New members were introduced and identified by colorful bead necklaces.
It was not only a social time but also a chance to celebrate our commitment to improving the lives of girls and women. And it was a time to celebrate our social and political activism this year.
Members participated in the Women’s March on a national and local level. Fifth grade girls participated in the Stem conference held in February. Equal Pay Day was supported through the national Start Smart Salary Negotiation program which was presented to Hodges women. Scholarships were given to women over 21 to help fund their education. Books were distributed to school children to provide an opportunity to have a book in their homes through the Reading is Fundamental program.
In addition, we were involved in a variety of special interest groups that help to foster friendships and provide enrichment, including book clubs of all genres, Great Decisions that explores U.S foreign policy and Talks and Tours that took us to the Von Liebig Art Center and the Lorenzo Walker Technical College.
This is a time to reflect on all that we have been able to accomplish and to look forward to celebrating our 50th Anniversary as a branch in 2018.
